Bandite di Scarlino Trail Area & Bike Park in Maremma

Since 2013 this extremely vast territory dedicated to cycling has been the centre of Italian mountain biking, thanks not only to its geographical position but also to its reputation as one of the most famous single bike trails worldwide. Here the climate is mild, with very a very low rainfall and over 200 days of sun a year. These particular features make almost the entire area traversable by bike over terrains that are practically perfect and always well maintained.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREA

The district has three distinct trail areas: Bandite di Scarlino, Massa Marittima, and Sentieri Castiglionesi/Tirli. The variety of routes characterizes the Trail Center: from the easy cross country to the challenging endurance of famous trails such as the "Rock oh", passing through the flow of the "Quercia Numerata". Some downhillers can have fun along freeride tracks along the "firebreaks" that are dispersed along the landscape. Bikers of all levels find themselves immersed in nature: pedaling single trails that cross the thick Mediterranean scrub, from hilly peaks of 400/500 meters above sea level up to hidden beaches which are not otherwise accessible. There are long loops for lovers of less arduous off-road terrain, such as gravel or cycle touring enthusiasts, offer satisfaction to those who want to clock up kilometers and enjoy panoramic points overlooking the entire Tuscan Archipelago. Even highway lovers can satisfy their passion for cyling: on well paved roads with little traffic as well as gentle climbs and long flat stretches between a medieval village in the hinterland and a rocky promontory just a few meters from the sea.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA

The bush, a characteristic vegetation of these steep coasts on the sea - has an undergrowth that creates tunnels, single tracks and trails of various difficulties. The green that grows from below closes luxuriantly in the tunnel of chestnut leaves, beech, oaks and cork oaks, giving the passage scents of black currant, wild cyclamen and other various essences. The wood where, paying attention, there are slow and silent turtles.

This is an area rich in culture and history: in Pian D'Alma (the Bike Park area close to Punta Ala) there are some Etruscan tombs, the Scarlino fortress, and its archaeological park tells of a remote past (from the Hellenic remains to the late Middle Ages) and the ancient village of Castiglione della Pescaia which houses an imposing medieval castle. Even the Maremma hinterland, the one closest to the sea, brings two-wheel lovers right up to the Colline Metallifere Park, in the municipalities of Gavorrano and Massa Marittima, along the "wine roads" where various vine and wine products can be tasted in numerous variations of food and wine themes (Morellino di Scansano, Monteregio di Massa Marittima, Montecucco, Bianco di Pitigliano are just some of the most famous DOCs).
